Relief Printmaking with Wood, Linoleum and Sintra
Instructor: Christina Kang

Students will learn how to create imagery, carve, and print with a variety of relief matrices including: linoleum, Sintra, and Shina plywood. Each matrix has different properties that can lead to different types of imagery and textures - i.e., linoleum and Sintra can be easily cut out into unique shapes or cut to be puzzle configurations, Shina plywood has a subtle wood grain, Sintra can be carved and engraved into for very fine detail.

We will explore a variety of different approaches to carving and inking, learning expressive techniques. Participants will also learn how to print multiple layers of color. Emphasis will be on building up colors from light to dark and developing rich tones. We will be using oil and water-based inks. The printing will be done by press and by hand.

Demonstrations on the reductive process (Color process using a single block) and Chiaroscuro method (Color process using multiple blocks) will be covered. Additional techniques covered include transferring an image to a block, carving, several registration methods, block to block transfers, color mixing, inventive inking, press printing, hand burnishing, and tool care. Each participant will be able to create and edition a print.

*The material fee covers materials such as printmaking inks, newsprint, brayers, cleaning supplies and one block 8x10 inches of Shina Plywood (very soft and easy to carve wood). Students are responsible for getting their own carving tools and printmaking paper. The instructor will provide information about where to buy carving tools for registered students.
